✦ What it does
Built for real-world copy and paste.
Removes Word and Docs clutter
Strips inline styles, classes, IDs, comments, empty tags and the extra markup word processors add.
Fixes typography
Turns smart quotes into straight quotes, non-breaking spaces into normal ones, and collapses extra spaces.
Word .docx import
Converts Word documents to clean, semantic HTML with headings, lists and tables intact.
Two-way editing
Edit visually or in the code editor, with syntax highlighting and search; the two stay in sync.
Tables ready to publish
Optionally styles table headers in your colours, so tables look right in emails and CMS pages.
Private by design
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded or stored on a server.
✦ FAQ
Questions people ask.
Is the HTML Cleaner free?
Yes. It's free to use with no sign-up and no limits. We built it for our own content work and made it available to everyone.
Is my content uploaded anywhere?
No. Cleaning, formatting and Word imports all happen in your browser. Your latest draft is kept in your browser's local storage so it survives a refresh, and you can clear it at any time by clearing the editor.
Can I paste from Microsoft Word and Google Docs?
Yes. Paste straight into the visual editor, or use Import Word Doc to convert a .docx file. The cleaner then removes the extra styles, classes and empty tags those programs add.
What do the Gmail, Outlook and CMS presets do?
They switch on the cleaning options that suit each destination. The CMS / Blog preset strips styling so your website's own design takes over, while the email presets keep the formatting email clients need.
Will the HTML work in WordPress, HubSpot, Shopify or Webflow?
Yes. Copy the cleaned HTML and paste it into the HTML or code view of your editor. Clean, simple markup is also easier for search engines and screen readers to understand.
Can I convert HTML to Markdown?
Yes. Use Export and choose Markdown to download a .md file, or HTML File to download the cleaned HTML.
